Are you an expert?

I snapped off a piece of my front tooth last week. Happily, not painful as it was a long-standing piece of dental decoration rather than my actual tooth, but nonetheless its disappearance created both a cosmetic and eating challenge.

Fortunately, I could get in quickly to see Dr Ved. He reviewed the previous diagnosis, sent me off for X-rays, then explained the issues with just doing a replacement fix, such as losing more of the remaining tooth when it fell out again and potential exposure to more nerve damage in an already traumatised tooth. The best solution was to crown the front teeth.

Did you notice what Dr Ved did? He had my records so he could reference previous discussions. He updated his assessment by getting an X-ray done. Then he advised that, whilst he could do what the customer (me) asked for, the better solution was different. He also explained how that treatment fitted with other dental work I want done and the timing and costs involved. The whole experience left me confident to follow the expert’s advice and recommendations.

What do you notice about the experts you engage in your personal and business life? In serving your own customers, how ‘expertly’ are your team showing up? What things should be tweaked to give a better experience? (keeping better records, delivering an assessment, asking better questions, giving stronger advice?)
